I took off work (and was written up for it) to make this much-needed appointment with a rheumatologist. I was originally diagnosed with Bipolar and PTSD. After several hospital visits with reports of unexplained pain and gastro problems I was finally diagnosed with fibromyalgia and started on Neurontin (which was also the only anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication I was offered and which I desperately needed). My psychiatrist cut me off the prescription though citing that I would soon be seeing Dr. Olajide and that it should be his responsibility as a rheumatologist do run further tests and prescribe further medication. However when I arrived Dr. Olajide could not have expressed less interest, refused to do any testing (such as trigger point testing for fibromyalgia), but conceded to run some basic blood tests. I'm very frustrated because I'm just now looking back at my medical chart and I see that the results indicate I was extremely hypothyroid (5 mIU/L) and Vitamin D deficient (a tale-tell sign of fibromyalgia) and that either of these results could have indicated a true need for nerve and muscle pain relief. Dr. Olajide said I could take it up with my psychiatrist, who was also baffled and frustrated because he did not want the responsibility or liability, and I ended up losing my job because I just could not deal with the daily pain and fatigue. Patients should not have to shop around for a doctor who will listen to them regarding their fibromyalgia or hypothyroidism.
